Skills for Energy are happy to share our Young Energisers programme – a free classroom resource designed to develop young people’s skills, whilst raising awareness of the wide range of job opportunities in the energy sector.
Initially developed for year 8 students, we have created four interactive, energy-based classroom challenges based on Renewables, Nuclear, Oil & Gas and Emergency Response. Working alongside both industry experts and careers leaders to ensure the students receive the most up-to-date knowledge on the industry, these activities are also aligned with the CDI careers framework and the Gatsby Benchmarks 2, 4 and 5.

Renewables
This session introduces the students to the renewables industry, before focusing on wind energy. It highlights the growing future for the wind industry and the wide variety of job opportunities available. This presentation is then followed by an interactive activity of building wind turbines to test blade efficiency.
Nuclear
This session introduces nuclear energy to the students, focusing on existing and future opportunities and the skills and behaviours required in the industry. Students are then challenged to build different pylon designs, to test the effect of forces and loads on structures.
Oil and Gas
This session provides a background to the oil and gas industry, before focusing on the new and developing technologies being used within it. This is then followed by the opportunity to design and build a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).
Emergency Response
In this session, the students will undertake a tabletop exercise, an activity used within the energy industry. They will first learn about a fire on an onshore wind turbine, before planning how they would deal with emergency responses.
